INDIA-GERMANY BILATERAL RELATIONS

Germany is amongst India’s most important partners for trade, investment and technology. Economic and commercial relations between India and Germany date back to the early 16thcentury when well-known German trading companies from Augsburg and Nuremberg, with the help of Portuguese, developed a new sea route around Africa, as they sailed in search of precious stones and spices for trading purposes. Thereafter in the 16th and 18th centuries, a number of German companies were established with the express purpose of trading with Indian and other East Asian countries. In 1867, Siemens built the first telegraph connection between Kolkata and London. In 1896, Bayer started its operations in India. In 2011-2013, we celebrated 60 years of diplomatic relations between India and Germany.

Germany is India’s largest trading partner in European Union and 6th largest trading partner globally. Germany is also India’s second largest technology partner. 1.   Param Vir Chakra, the highest wartime gallantry award has been awarded only 21 times till date, and 2/3rds of these were awarded posthumously. 2.  Siachen Glacier is the highest battlefield in the world. More soldiers die here from cold than enemy attacks. The temperature drops to -50 degree         celsius, at times. Siachen is jokingly referred to as a punishment posting, as   over 850 people have lost their lives here due to bad weather. The official       duration of the posting is three months and anything more than that can             damage a soldier’s life beyond repair(Dementia, ED, frostbites are          common). However, people often end up spending around six months to an       year, since no one wants to be posted there and those who are already there    cannot be relieved until reinforcements arrive.
